About Omsk

I am personally a big fan of Moscow travel, but sometimes it is interesting to see Siberia too. I will continue writing interesting facts about Russia.

Omsk is one of the oldest cities in Russia. The city is very beautiful and has many historical and architectural monuments. The architectural monuments combine various styles- Renaissance, Siberian Baroque and classicism.

Many famous architects took part in the creation of magnificent buildings of past centuries. Among famous architects are Vagner, Savrasov and many others, who created the unique style of the city.

Many historical monuments are connected with prominent people of Russia. The Commandant’s House in the southern-western part of the Omsk fortress represents the architecture of the end of the 18th century. Many commandants lived there, among them the last commandant de Grave, who played a very important role in the life of many Siberian convicts. Siberia was a place where many State convicts were sent for sentence, among them many prominent people of Russia.

Omsk is also famous for its theatres. The first wooden theatre was built in 1872, but later was destroyed by the great fire. In 1901 the construction of the first brick theatre in Omsk started.

There are many convents and monasteries in Omsk. Atchair convent is one of the places in Omsk, which is very often visited by the tourists. This convent was built at the beginning of the 20th century, when St. Ivan Kronshtadtsky blessed the site near a Cossack village. The convent was closed in the 1930-es and became a prison, where 200 thousands of prisoners died of hunger, cold and hard labor. After the Second World War convent began to revive only beginning from 1992, when His Eminence Feodosy blessed it.
